Character Analysis Of Teresa In The Kayak By Debbie Spring

Decent Essays
Teresa, one of the main characters in “The Kayak” by Debbie Spring is, during most of the story, helpless. Firstly, even though Teresa feels that she is safe, secure, wild and free in the water, she knows that it is not her home. She accepts that she has to leave the water to be dependent again and this makes her feel very helpless. Secondly, Teresa shares in her thoughts that, “My closer friends tried a little harder. They lasted two or three visits. Then, they stopped coming around.” This means that Teresa has no friends and she knows that people find it awkward and uncomfortable to talk to her because of her condition. Lastly, Teresa shares, “Another helpless moment,” after her wheelchair gets stuck in the sand and Jamie is behind her.

No matter what era we are in, we can’t deny the fact that there are some fundamental similarities and differences between a woman and a girl. With that being said, the authors have successfully showing how both Katherine Ames and Jig faced their partners’ selfishness, and how the two female protagonists were different in making decision based on their man. Although Katherine Ames and Jig had different characteristics, they both failed to communicate with the male protagonists efficiently. As well as Katherine Ames, Jig also had to handle her boyfriend’s selfishness.…

“Girl, Interrupted” by Susanna Kaysen is based on a true story about the author, who spent time at a mental institution called McLean Hospital in the late 1960’s. Throughout the book the author writes about her experiences at the hospital and the people she encountered while she was there. While Susanna Kaysen encountered many people at McLean, none played a major role in the conflict that arises in the book, which is Susanna being sent to the institution and having to face her mental illness. Although it can be argued that the doctor who sent Susanna to McLean is the antagonist, it is clear that Susanna is both the antagonist and protagonist, since her biggest problem is dealing with being sent to a mental institution, her mental illness,…

Imagine a wagon with wooden wheels, helping a family move across a valley. The wheels have to endure all of the bumps, rocks, mud, and water, yet a family will not move anywhere unless the wheels are on the wagon. This is similar to the idea of empathy that Harper Lee is trying to emphasize through Atticus. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, she keeps proving through Atticus that even though being truly empathetic toward someone less fortunate than you may bring them down in society, standing up for one another could also make a whole society respect one another.…

In John Patrick Shanley’s play, the struggle for Sister Aloysius to prove—and for Sister James to believe—that Father Flynn molested Donald Muller serves as the central conflict. Father Flynn is progressive, hoping to reform the church which causes the more conservative Sister Aloysius to appear intolerant and suspicious of him simply for his radical ideas. This conflict addresses other concerns beyond abuse, such as that of the subjugation of gender in the Catholic church, which affects Sister Aloysius’s pursuit of justice and still resonates throughout contemporary pursuits of justice, as well. Shanley’s 2004 play convolutes Sisters Aloysius and James’s firm belief in the church’s patriarchal hierarchy by stymying them as they pursue justice…
