Prejudice In Paxton's Sweetheart

Sweetheart is a touching story of an unlikely friendship between a human boy and an extraterrestrial girl. They have a very strong bond and Paxton, the human boy, cares for Sweetheart very much and even admits to being in love with her. They are neighbors and are always hanging out together. However, Paxton’s mother is not very comfortable with her son being friends with someone who doesn’t look like him. This story hints at the fact that Sweetheart is being discriminated against due to the fact that she is from a different planet. She also shows prejudice by saying that Sweetheart’s kind are the enemies of humans and that they are evil. Paxton’s mother is convinced that Sweetheart is a monster, but in reality the monster could be her. This story shows how we as a society can tend to discriminate against others and that prejudice is still very relevant in today’s society. It also shows how we are not born to hate but rather taught by someone.

The real monster in the story was Paxton’s mother, because judged Sweetheart and the alien race. Paxton’s mom supported the idea of deporting all the aliens, including her son’s best friend because she believed it would bring peace. She opposed of her son’s friendship with Sweetheart, because she was different. She also instilled some of her prejudice views onto Paxton by telling him that the world would be a better place without Sweetheart here. We are not born hateful, but rather taught by our parent’s or others to be aware of our differences, whether it be physical or religious.
