The Use of Character
In “Death Constant beyond Love” the character of Senator Onesimo Sanchez is presented as man with a big secret; a secret that leaves him lonely and wanting love. In the story we learn that Sanchez is married and has children. He has a happy family and he is “the happiest of all” (464). Sanchez life changed after he learned that he was dying. He isolated himself from the family he loves. Instead of telling them he was sick, he left and went on the road campaigning. Here it seems as if Sanchez is trying to spare his happy family the grief of losing him. Sanchez is caring towards his family, but he is also dishonest.
