Ralph Lord Of The Flies Character Analysis Essay

For my first character analysis, I chose Ralph. I chose him because of many reasons. First of all Ralph, is the first person that we encounter in the book. He is described as ‘the fair boy.’ This tells the reader that Ralph is a young boy. Immediateley Ralph takes the role as a leader, when he is with Piggy. Then they find a conch(a type of shell). Straightaway Ralph managed to blow the conch and summon the rest of the boys on the island. The fact that Ralph can blow the conch, is a sign of strength and power, because he is the one that calls all the boys on the island.

Secondly when all the boys have met up on the beach; they establish a few rules. Then they have a vote to decide the leader of the group. The two candidates are Jack and Ralph. Ralph wins the vote, because the smaller kids and the choir looked up to him. Ralph also seemed like a good leader that would take the right decisions at the right times.

Also at the start of the book, Jack doesn’t have that much power but gradually he starts to gain more and more until he is the most powerful child on the whole island. He is a key character.

Piggy:

Piggy is the second character that we encounter in the book. He is a small and fat boy with glasses. He doesn’t play as big of a role as Ralph and Jack but he is still an important character. He is Ralph’s bestfriend on the island and always sticks close to him. Wherever Ralph went Piggy went the same.

He was always thinking on the positive side of things. Whenever Ralph was feeling down he would cheer him up. Piggy also plays a huge part where they need fire, because none of the boys know how to light the fire but then Ralph uses Piggy’s glasses to light the fire. So without Piggy there would be no fire. Then one night the hunters steal Piggy’s glasses because they need fire. So when Piggy and Ralph go to get his glasses back, Jack refuses to give them

Piggy’s glasses are significance of hope and intelligence through the growth of humanity. In the novel Jack states,”Piggy specs, if the fire’s all out we’ll need them,”(Golding 76).This shows how Piggy’s glasses are a useful tool for the boys and without Piggy’s intelligence the boys wouldn't have survived on the island. Also the fact, Piggy’s glasses are used as a positive attribute, however at the same time are used as a negative attribute of destroying humanity. The character from the lord of the flies that I admire most is Piggy. There had been countless times where I have been pushed to the point of giving up, but every single time I have had a way to escape, whether that was putting it off, making excuses or letting someone else do it, but in Piggy’s situation he had nowhere to run from his problem but he still powered through. He is a leader, He is relentless. He is thoughtful. That is why I admire Piggy the most.…
