Character Analysis Of Ponyboy's Character From 'The Outsiders'

Improved Essays
A trait that Ponyboy seems to be trying his hardest to retain is the basic feeling of empathy. Ponyboy is harassed by the Socs and is underprivileged compared to them, nevertheless, he doesn’t hate them. A Soc that he has befriended, Sherri Valance, acted as a window to the life of a Soc for Ponyboy. Ponyboy shows an understanding of the fact that both sides have their own problems and accordingly both sides’ problems are just as real as the others. Ponyboy expresses this well in the essay I mentioned previously. He says, "Randy was supposed to be too cool to feel anything, but there was pain in his eyes." (Pg. 116) Even though Ponyboy is different from the rest of the Greasers, that doesn’t mean that he isn’t without his flaws.

I think the characteristics that Ponyboy has definitely refer to this. First of all, he is not only the youngest Curtis brother but also the youngest greasers. This should make him the innocent, lovable, baby. Pony really proves that not all gang members are always JD’s (juvenile delinquents). Another thing was his love for literature.…

Ponyboy has been intelligent and gotten good grades all his life, unlike the rest of his gang. Additionally, Ponyboy likes to read and do other things that Socs are interested in, and stay out of trouble. If Ponyboy was to go to highschool and still maintain his good grades and behavior, then he has a possibility to become a Soc. Therefore, when Ponyboy is a senior in highschool, his character will most likely be like one of a Soc.…

Ponyboy tells the story of how they ran away, saving the children in the burning church, and the perspective of a Greaser who wanted to amount more than a ‘lousy’ boy with greasy hair. Without these two characters, us readers wouldn’t be able to see the story that took place. Ponyboy believed that the Greasers and Soc’s lived completely different lifestyles, which he figured out wasn’t all that true. The Greasers and Soc’s both had problems in their own lives. It ain 't fair for Ponyboy to have to stay up in that church with Soda and Darry worryin ' about him all the time.’" (74). The fact that Pony’s brothers still worried for him despite everything that had happened after he had ran away gives insight on their strong family bonds, even if they are greasers. The Outsiders The Outsiders was written nearly 50 years ago and schools still use it in the classroom today. It was based around stereotypes of groups, such as Greasers, in the book. At first Ponyboy thinks the Socs have it made, but by the end of the novel, he too realizes that "things are rough all over". Not only does he find that different people have different problems, but little experiences can be the same for any other, such as the sunset. Once he views Cherri's and Randy's perspective without his own ideals clouding his judgment he is able to understand that the sides make no difference unless they are perceived that way. Ponyboy realizes Darry really did love and care for him and just yelled at him at times and nagged him because he didn't want him to get hurt. His fear of "losing another person he loved" (p.98) is what makes him so protective, and it's not that he has no feelings as Ponyboy originally believes, but too many.…
