The main character of the novel, Phoebe Pyncheon, is a cousin of Hepzibah from New England. One day Phoebe visits her cousin at the seven gabled mansion. She realizes that Hepzibah is not glad she came because she has been in solitude by herself in the mansion for a while. Hepzibah is one of the members of the old Pyncheon family. Thus, she suffers due to the ancestral sin passed onto her. Phoebe seeing this decides she would love to make her cousin happy by helping her make a living and by bringing unusual life into the gloomy mansion. She does most of the work to prepare meals and helps bring in money for food through being shop-keeper all out of the kindness of her heart. She eventually meets her other cousin Clifford and cheers him up in addition to helping out around the house and garden. No matter what she does, she does it with completely selfless intentions.
