Odysseus, Hero or Foe?
Odysseus, good or evil, great truth or blind lie? Odysseus has been to hades and back he has done everything for his family. The book makes one believe he was 100% determined to do anything for them at this point after all the monsters and creatures he has battled. In the beginning Odysseus is trapped on an island, prisoner to Calypso. He could of took his own life at this point, but he decided to stay loyal to his family and do his best to fight and arrive home. He waited and waited for years and years, untill the gods delivered the message that he is to return home, “Now Zeus has said he shall go home and return to his house and country.”(page 48) On his voyage home he faces many beasts and powerful monsters. He ventured to Hades (ancient underworld) just to see the profit and be told his future of return and unspoken dangers. That is where he found his close “friends” and mother. His mother had told him, “Your wife remains in your house, but she is troubled. She spends her whole time in tears both day and night. But no man takes your place.”(page 109)
He became determined to get home and see his wife and take back his land from the suitors who were trying to take her hand in marriage. Odysseus arrives home, after many years, slaughters the suitors, and gets his family and home back. He spared few lives, “Stop! The man is guiltless. Do him no harm. We will spare the herald, Medon too.”(page 189) cried Telemachus. People who believe he is no hero may say it's because he has spilt blood of others. Would you rather spare around 60 and take one, or take 60 plus you. You may be saying neither, but you would have no choice, you must protect one. He has killed to protect many others who could have lost their own life. He did everything to get home to his family, he had to battle, he wanted to get the men back home safely.
