Prospectus Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is definitely an interesting and unique piece of literature, which is precisely why I have chosen to complete this assignment on this story. The excessive use of the term "good" in this story is very fascinating. In the beginning of "A Good man is Hard to find" the grandmother explains that good people seem to be extremely rare to find after hearing that The Misfit escaped prison. Further into the storyline, the family meets an owner of a rundown barbeque joint, and Bailey's mother calls him a good man for giving two workers gasoline on a charge when he knew he wouldn't receive his money for it. Lastly, the grandmother calls The Misfit a good man right before he shoots her in the…

In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” I believe the grandmother means when she calls someone a good man, that they are a person whose values are those that match her own. For instance, she first calls Red Sammy Butts a good man, and what I believe she meant by that is he tries to the two gentlemen out by lending them gas on credit even though they never pay for the gas. He was trying to do a good deed and the grandmother noticed. The grandmother declared both Redd and the misfit to be good people. They are the only two she claimed to be a good man.…

Characterization is important to the short story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” because of the fact that the grandmother is unnamed throughout the story. The author characterizes her as a very arrogant person who views herself superior to others because she is a “lady”. Since she considers herself a “lady” and is arrogant, she frequently passes judgement on other individuals. For example, when she says she’d never bring her children in the same direction of The Misfit and when she criticizes the children’s mother because they have not traveled to many different places. The grandmother’s appearance is very important to her characterization because it dresses her in a carefully selected dress and hat, that is most important to being considered…

I was expecting The Lottery to be about luck or good fortune, but it was the opposite. After reading the first paragraph I realized the lottery that was taking place in the village was not the kind of lottery I was expecting it to be. I thought the story was intriguing and suspenseful to read because I wanted to find out what the lottery was for and who the “winner” was going to be. I also thought it was interesting how the lottery had been a tradition in the village for so long that the people there seemed to accept it and thought others towns were crazy for getting rid of the lottery. I thought the ending of A Good Man Is Hard to Find was a little hard to follow…

This shows that it is intentional that O 'Connor wrote the Grandmother to not be a good person. By having another character state that the Grandmother was not good, the point of the story is reinforced. This is not a story that is meant to scare the reader with the shocking violence, nor is it meant to make the reader laugh with it 's comedic scenes. This is a story of an awful woman that is so caught up in judging others and believing that she should be the one deciding if a person is good or not that she is unable to see the wrongness in herself. “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” sends the message that one should not be so quick to judge others, especially when one is not a very good person…
