In The Lottery, Mr. Summers is a jolly man who works in the coal business. Every year the town holds a Lottery amongst the townspeople and Mr. Summers is the host. No one remembers why the lottery is held except that it is just a tradition. In fact, many would like to get rid of it all together but the older townspeople disagree and feel the village would fall apart without it. The story takes place in a small village in the town square. The town’s people gather in the square at 10:00 in the morning and the children create a pile of stones.
