The costume Furtunado wears falls incredibly in line with his demise in the story.For example since he is dressed as a fool its ironic hes acting like one. Furtunado is really drunk and is gullible to hat hes told. In addition he continues to drink becuase he wants the Amonilado he believes what Montresor tells him to gt to it. Frtundo is a fool to Montresors mind games. Montresor states " We will go back your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired,and beloved." We know Montresor wants revenge and will get it. For example Montresor says " I vowed revenge at length I will be avenged." In addition his hidden identity is perfect for his plan. He states " precluded the idea of risk." and "a mask of black silk and drawing a roquelaire closely about my person." We know he has thought about his plan from his disguise to tricking Furtunado. The mysterious mask and cape is perfect for his role as the "villain" in the story. Montresor is very wise with his plan and his wardrobe.
The two main characters feed off of each other. The appearance just adds another element to them and their encounter. Its very interesting to see how the two different characters are dressed and to see the ending of the story. The author using these somewhat cliche outfits for the characters was wise, when you look deeper into it it clicks.
