Character Analysis Of Miss Maudie In To Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee

Decent Essays
Miss Maudie is another great example of someone understanding others. After Atticus shot the dog, Jem and Scout both wanted to tell the world. They didn’t take into account whether or not Atticus wanted everyone to know. If he did, he probably would be out daily practicing his marksmanship. So Ms.Maudie told the kids why he wanted no one to know, "People in their right minds never take pride in their talents" ( Lee 124). Atticus may be a great shooter, but that does not necessarily mean that he wants everyone to know it. If he wanted to, people all over Maycomb would know all about his exceptional gun skills. Ms.Maudie knows though why he does not want people to know. She puts herself in his shoes, and considers what people might think if they

Racism takes many forms, like the purity and goodness of innocent people is destroyed by people that have a different perspective of them. The innocence of people is destroyed by evil. In this novel the innocent people are social outcasts due to the color of their skin and the racist stereotypes around them, while evil slowly destroys a person because they are not the same race. In To kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses metaphors to disguise symbols throughout the novel. Some of those symbols are Miss Maudie's nutgrass, Tim Johnson “the mad dog”, and the Mockingbird, each of these symbols have a different meaning of how different people in Maycomb view racism.…

Not only did Miss Maudie point out that after Atticus shoot the dog there was nothing for Scout nor Jem to have been ashamed of, but showed them that Atticus is brave and shoots only when he has to. Also, when Jem asked Miss Maudie about why Atticus hasn’t told him about him hunting she answers, “If your father’s anything he’s civilized in his heart. Marksmanship’s a gift from God, a talent- oh, you have to practice to make it perfect, but shootin’s different from playing the piano or the like. In this journal I will be characterizing Atticus. Atticus in chapters 10-15 is mysterious for many reasons. One of the many reasons he was mysterious is because it said in the book “ Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time” (Lee 129). If I found out or anyone did that my dad was a great shooter before I was born I would be asking myself why did he not tell me before. Atticus could have been trying to protect Scout and Jem by not letting them know that he had a great shot, but if he was trying to protect what was he trying to protect them from?…

Miss Maudie felt that Atticus never told his kids Scout and Jem about him being a good shooter because “. . . shooin’s different from playing the piano or it like. I think maybe he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over the most living things. I guess he decided he wouldn’t shoot until he had to, and he had to today.” (98).…

Atticus was a whole different person before “‘. . . Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time’” (Lee 112). When Miss Maudie tells Scout and Jem that Atticus used to be the best shot, neither of them could believe it. Their father, probably the most level headed and humble person they ever met had hidden part of his past “Nevertheless, he refuses to use his background as an excuse to hold himself above others and instead is a model of tolerance and understanding” (“To Kill a Mockingbird”).…

Harper Lee once said “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” This problem still happens today, everyone judges a person without evening knowing them. When someone judges someone with tattoos and piercings they automatically think he is a bad guy but that isn’t always true. Their point of view can be totally wrong but they would never know. They will never get to truly know the person because their point of view shows them as bad people.…

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem represents a mockingbird because Jem had done no harm, brought joy to others, and was a victim of undeserved violence. First, after Scout and Walter Cunningham had an exchange of blows, Jem invited him over to their house for dinner. Jem was stopping the fight with Scout and Walter by kindly inviting Walter Cunningham over to dinner. He was bringing joy to them both by changing the subject and having the courtesy to think of others and not just himself. In addition, when Mr. Radley had filled the knothole with cement, Jem got very upset, and Scout said, “When we went in the house I saw he had been crying…” (84).…

Jem, in many ways, is your average young teen. He has a father who he looks up to and a younger sister he is very protective of. He wants to follow in his father’s footsteps, but like all teens acts out and exclaims, “I wanted to be a lawyer, but I ain’t so sure now” (66) when arguing with his father, a statement he will most likely retract. I know this because I have been there. Just like I’ve lied to my sister to make a situation seem better, similar to Jem, “Miss Caroline’s introducing a new way of teaching.…

Atticus’s empathy toward Tom Robinson is a major cause of Maycomb County respecting one another by the end. When Atticus told Jem some advice about how killing a mockingbird is a sin, Scout was confused and asked Mrs. Maudie about it, who clarified to her, “‘Your father’s right,’ she said. ‘Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make us music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corn cribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird (119).’”…

Atticus represents a protective shield between society and those that are defenseless because he abides by this belief by standing up for what is right, even though he is alone, and he gives the Negro citizens hope for equality. His accepting and fair attitude also contributes to his confidence and perseverance to continue to defend Tom Robinson. When Scout tells Atticus she doesn’t want to go to school because of Miss Caroline’s behavior, he tells Scout that to truly understand a person, you have to step in their shoes and put yourself in their position. (30) This virtue of acceptance and working to understand others allows Atticus to be patient and calm when dealing with people and guides him to do the right thing when taking action to deal with the social injustices. Atticus follows this principle to understand people, such as Boo Radley and Mrs. Dubose, and avoid being prejudiced towards them like most Maycomb citizens; he…
