Melba goes through so much at school, but she wants to succeed in integration by completing a full year at Central High School. The other kids at school would do acts of violence such as girls throwing ''flaming paper wad '' while others girl ''were leaning over the top of the stalls on either side '' while Melba was in the bathroom unable to escape(Beales 119). She could have stopped going to that school that day, transferred back to her old school with all her friends, and be safe and happy, but she did not. Melba kept going to that school because she was determined to finish a school year and make a difference in schools with racism. Melba did experience small trials where she would want to quit, but she never did. Melba often found her determination because she felt it was her duty from God to do this for her people. Melba had some tough situations to endure to get to completing a full school year at Central High School. The whites were determined to make Melba quit, but Melba was more determine to succeed. The others were so determined to make her quit they went as far as taking away her mother's job and Mother Lois revealed " ' they'll give me back my job only if I withdraw Melba from Central High School immediately ' " , but Melba's family was determined to make all of the suffering Melba had been through worth it by her finishing school (Beales 203). …show more content…
She put herself through so much at that high school, but yet she always knew God would get her through. Melba always thought that God has given her this duty of breaking down the walls of racism by integrating. She would get frustrated at times, but she always kept going because Grandma India would always remind her " "Now you see that's the reason God spared your life. You're supposed to carry this banner for our people" when she was tired of getting assaulted at school (Beales 3). These words were a reminder of how God will protect Melba throughout her journey at Central High, and that God has given her this opportunity and duty for a reason. Melba was always spotted and easily picked on due to her dark skin, but she always believed that God's purpose for her needed to be filled despite the hardships along the way. Melba had the opportunity to speak at a meeting about integration to bring awareness to how she was treated, but instead she simply talked about God and put herself aside. Melba stated that she " didn't speak about integration or say things about us or them— I just talked about God and how he cares for each of us." The fact that she had the opportunity to change the views of herself with some of her peers, but decided to talk about the positives God gave them all shows how religious she is. She never had the opportunity to speak without instant persecution,
