When chased away by Victor, the monster wanders a bit everywhere, alone and inexperienced, before meeting a virtuous family that he will observe from afar for a long time. He will pick up on how to talk by listening to them and will educate himself. He starts to form a clearer understanding of the world, humans and his situation, knowledge he did not have before and, admiring this family's virtues, tries to come up with plans to approach them and become their friend. The description made by the monster presents us a very kind and altruistic family who went to jail for protecting someone else, they stand for the pure side of humanity unlike Victor who lost himself in the sin of pride. He believes that their virtues will make them accept him and the first reject was merely the fruit of Victor's sinful attitude, "I persuaded myself that when they should become acquainted with my admiration of their virtues, they could compassionate with me". (154) The family represents society as a whole for the monster who has not been acquainted with more humans than them and his creator. He believes that learning humanity's virtues would make them accept him despite his appearance. When he goes to talk to them, it is full of hope and fear, and he is met with violence. The son, Felix, beats him with a stick. Shocked and full of self-hatred, the monster does nothing at first, showing how pure and innocent he was at first, not even defending himself even though he is aware that he could kill him and overpowered him very easily, "I could have torn him limb from limb". (160) After this encounter comes the first time the monster feels hatred which is the motivation of all his crimes to come, "For the first time the feelings of revenge and hatred filled my bosom" (164). This family that were his entire perception of humanity as he had never seen other humans and were his ideal of virtue. The fact that they rejected him just like his creator shows
