The Sun Also Rises Analysis

Heather Ostman’s article “The Sun Also Rises” from the Encyclopedia of the American Novel begins with an explanation of the book’s title. The Sun also Rises gets its name from Ecclesiastes, which is also quoted at the beginning of the book along with a quote from Gertrude Stein about the Lost Generation. Ostman notes that the connection of Ecclesiastes hopefulness with Stein’s hopelessness sustain the feeling of meaninglessness and alienation of the characters of the book following the Great War. In The Sun Also Rises as well as other books from the time period, love seems to fail time and time again, as relationships cannot be sustained or produce children. Love seems futile in this era, Ostman points out in this work as well as in T. S. Eliot’s …show more content…
Though he feels alienated, he also tries to pray and to encourages Brett to as well. This is to show that even though it seems faith is lost, Jake continues to try, just as humans have not yet given up on finding purpose in their lives and progressing after almost all was destroyed by war before. I agree with Ostman’s analysis of The Sun Also Rises. She goes in depth of several different areas of the book: the importance of the title, symbolism of the characters, the disillusionment of the Lost Generation, the role of alcohol, Hemingway’s writing style, and the underlying hope of the novel. The front matter of this book holds a lot of meaning; Hemingway could have chosen to call the book “The Sun Also Sets” or “The Sun Goes Down” but he did not, and this is to symbolize the hope underlying in both the book and the Lost Generation. Jake Barnes and Lady Brett’s inability to be intimate due to his injury is the reason that Brett cannot commit to him. Their relationship, as well as the many other failed relationships in The Sun Also Rises symbolize the futile attitude towards relationships in the era. Early on in the book, Jake asks, “‘couldn’t we just live together, Brett? Couldn’t we just …show more content…
I’d just tromper you with everybody. You couldn’t stand it… It’s my fault Jake. It’s the way I’m made’” (Hemingway 55). In this conversation, both characters admit their love for each other, but due to Brett’s free spirited personality and lifestyle, she cannot commit to Barnes. Brett’s lifestyle

The Beauty of Nature in “I’ll Tell You How the Sun Rose” In 1862, American poet Emily Dickinson read an article in Atlantic Monthly by Thomas Wentworth Higginson entitled “Letter to a Young Contributor” that inspired her. “The article offered witty, practical advice to young writers, pointedly including women, and spoke of the glory of language and the power and mystery of the individual word—ideas that resonated with Dickinson’s own sense of craft” (Leiter 319). Dickinson personally connected with Higginson’s message because she felt that it directly related to her poetry. Additionally, she wrote to him and included her poem, “I’ll Tell You How the Sun Rose,” in which she describes picturesque details through descriptive observations.…

It seems by the end of the novel, Jake and Brett are the only ones who seem to have come to terms with who they are and who they have become. Especially Brett, she always knew she was a bitch, but she never really noticed it until the end with Romero “I’m thirty-four, you know. I’m not going to be one of those bitches that ruins children” (247). She sent Romero away for her own benefit and I think that’s the Brett that Jake and Mike knew personally. Cohn and Romero didn’t know Brett like Jake and Mike did, and that’s growing up for Brett.…

In the novel “The Sun Also Rises” , written by Ernest Hemingway, two of the major characters, Jake Barnes and Robert Cohn, share certain similarities but are extremely different at the same time. Both characters are exceptionally prominent in the novel and greatly contribute to the excitement of the plot. Without these characters in the novel, the story would clearly not be as entertaining and would feel as though it is lacking something. Jake Barnes and Robert Cohn complete the story and help to keep the plot moving. Jake Barnes is the novel’s main character as well as narrator.…

‘’I felt so lonesome, all of the sudden. I almost wished I was dead,’’ a quote from the classic novel The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger which relates to how some teens felt at one point in their life. The novel was published to attract adult readers and has become popular for its themes, motifs, and connections an individual has with the main character, Holden Caulfield. We tend to feel a connection to the struggles of Holden Caulfield as we put ourselves in his shoes and see life through his perspective. The book is still pertinent due to Holden facing challenges such as loneliness and the inability to make a connection to make with a purpose thus the readers see themselves in Holden.…

The article that I have read is “Don’t Get Drunk, Jake”: Drinking, Drunkenness, and Sobriety in The Sun Also Rises by Donald A. Daiker. This article is mainly about claiming that Jake is not drunk as the whole meaning of the novel is seems that Jake wants to achieve his sobriety rather than to get drunk. He also proves that Jake is trying to achieve sobriety in his life based on the amount of alcohol that he had consumed, his drunkenness level and also his intention of consuming alcohol is more towards getting a state of composure in his life instead of just to get drunk without any intention. In my opinion, I agree with the writer statement about Jake didn’t gets drunk because he wants to achieve his sobriety after he has experienced a bad…

The emergence of male insecurity in both novels derives from the overpowering amount of female control. Harding and Billy Bibbit both portray the effects of an insecure male, caused by the destructiveness of Ratched, in Kesey’s novel. Under the belief that he cannot sexually satisfy his wife, Harding enrolled himself into the institution. Ratched uses his weakness against him through her constant questioning of his marriage which leads Harding to strengthen his belief, since he perceives Ratched as a “genius” (Kesey 64). Additionally, his wife’s promiscuous nature helps cement his insecurities as it leads him to believe that she is not sexually satisfied, evident when she “[blew] the black boy a kiss...slinging her hips forward” (33) and when…

Additionally, Adler’s theory of masculine protest influenced The Sun Also Rises. After reflecting on societal trends, Adler concluded that men see themselves as superior and have more control than women in society (Boerre 26). Throughout the novel, Brett changes her relationships constantly, but is always involved in a romantic relationship with one or more male characters at a time. Brett is independent because she chooses which men to have a relationship with, but, she is controlled by her need to be with a man. However, as a result of her dependence on males, Brett ultimately can control some of the men in the novel.…

In our modern day society, men are regarded mainly as strong, dominant figures who know exactly what they plan to do, and how they will carry out those plans. In short, to be a man means being powerful and the epitome of blunt force in human terms. Consequently, those who show weakness are looked down on or shamed, similarly to women who are seen as inferior in strength. In contrast, men are expected to put up a strong front and take out their emotions in a gratuitously violent way that romanticizes their strength.…

Being an ambulance driver during the war clearly influenced his character of Jake Barnes in his fiction, The Sun Also Rises. Barnes is depicted as a soldier in the war who receives a battle related injury just like Hemingway himself had endured through his time in the war. In Peter L. Hays' The Critical Reception of Hemingway's 'The Sun Also Rises', Hays describes Barnes as wounded and sexually incapacitated from the war which aside from the latter, seems all too familiar to Hemingway's personal experience in the war (Hays 4). Hemingway was quoted as saying, "When you go to war as a boy you have a great illusion of immortality.…
