The Sympathetic Character In Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

Improved Essays
Steinbeck wrote a great book about friendship called Of Mice and Men. This book is about George and Lennie, two best friends that go to work on a farm. They try to make money to start their own farm. The problem is Lennie has a developmental disorder that makes it hard for him to talk to people and he was often misunderstood. Lennie was portrayed as gentle, strong and not intelligent and would apologize for his mistakes. I this book Steinbeck made Lennie a sympathetic character that you would feel sorry for.

Lennie was gentle because he never would try to hurt a fly. He was a child trapped inside of a man's body. Slim said Lenny would never hurt anyone. Also Lennie would pet animals because of their smooth, soft fur. The author described

In the book Lennie starts drinking from the water and George has to tell him that it might not be clean water. But then Lennie keeps drinking water. I'm page 5 “ his hands went quickly and do his side coat Pockets he said gently George I ain't got mine I must have lost it he looked down at the ground and despair you never had none you crazy bastard I got both of them right here think I'd let you carry your own work card”
This trait affects the story because it controls what Lennie does and if he knows what is okay and not okay to do.This hurts him when he is talking with others because he does not understand social cues. Also this hurts him personally because people might misunderstand him and then get mad at him, which would get him into trouble.

The character does not change throughout the course of the chapters.
He remains the same throughout the book. He does not learn from his mistakes. For example, he killed the mice, dog, and even Curly’s wife by not knowing his own strength. This traite huts him and gets in into trouble because he touched a girls dress because it was soft he was kicked of of the farm.

I learned that being your best friend might not appear to others that your best friends because of the way you act with them. I also learned that your friends always have your best

Of course, readers pay attention to the word, “accidentally” but it is still a problem. Lennie likes to pet small animals, but he always ends up killing them. In the story, George talks about how Lennie used to catch mice at his aunt’s house. However, he would pet them so hard that they would bite him and he would pinch their heads until they died. Another example from the story would be when George and Lennie were making camp on the first night.…

However, this new idea of being able to tend for the rabbits really eagers Lennie because rather than someone caring for him, he could care for something. " The rabbits we're gonna get, and I get to tend 'em, cut grass an' give 'em water, an' like that” (69). It will be a moment of redemption, due to he would be able to take back his actions and show how caring and affectionate he really is towards the animals. This can also tie up with his innocent ways and attitude, by being able to show how eager he is to care for them. In addition, the idea of the rabbits also can be related to being able to…

However, before Lennie arrived at the farm he was mistreated by George, who took care of him. George would play jokes on him and Lennie didn’t know what was happening and almost died from George joking around with him. Nevertheless, Lennie had a way to calm himself down, he liked to pet soft things which show irony near the end of the story. Appearances can often be deceiving, as often times in today’s judgemental society people hide who they are to avoid judgement. In many classic American novels, the characters do the same. In John Steinbeck 's Of Mice and Men, Lennie appears very much a classic “tough guy.” In Ernest Hemingway 's The Old Man and The Sea, Santiago is viewed as being dangerously unlucky, as well as strange. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby seems to the public the picture of success and happiness.…

He often uses figurative language to compare Lennie to animals. The very first time we meet lennie in the book Lennie’s way of walking is compared to “the way a bear drags his paws”(2). This shows us a lot about Lennie’s appearance and demeanor. Steinbeck also shows us a lot about Lennie through the words of other characters. George often directly states throughout the novel that Lennie is “dumb as hell”(39) and others…
