Character Analysis Of Joseph Strorm In The Grapes Of Wrath

Joseph Strorm is shown as religious and strict father to David. Firstly, Joseph shows his true character in moments of concern when David asks for an extra hand. One evening, David had reached home and noticed a splinter in his hand which he pulled out but continued to bleed a lot. He was given assistance from his mother who helped him clean up the wound and neatly striped it up, as she finished helping her son, then David claims mentioning he could have managed on his own if he had a third hand to help him tie the strip. The room became silent and everyone glared at the young boy, Joseph’s response was, “Pray, you wretched boy for forgiveness you do not deserve, but which God, in His mercy, may yet grant you. Thirdly, David agrees to help a close friend, Sophie by not exposing her secret of having an extra toe which would define her as a Blasphemy. Being Joseph Strorm only son makes keeping the secret even harder for the David because he could be punished severally and it would put a very horrible impression towards his father and his family. David kept Sophie’s secret as he promised to do but that lead to Joseph finding out. As David enters his house after helping the Wender family Joseph snapped and asked him many questions and lectured him about concealing Sophie. After that Joseph ordered his son to go to his room and then David said, “My Father followed, picking up a whip from the table”. (Wyndham, 51) Picking up the inspector’s whip from the table shows how strong willing he is towards his religion and rules since he was ready to whip his child for an aberration he made. His true character his revealed at this moment displaying how bad tempered he can be.
