As Jonas starts to receive the memories that The Giver transfers to him he makes a brave decision to flee the community and go to Elsewhere. In Elsewhere, Jonas will try and get everyone's memories back. Without the memories, knowledge is useless. As you can see, by knowing the memories of the outside world, Jonas makes inferences such as “‘What if they were allowed to choose their own mate? And choose wrong’” ( Lowry 124). In the world that they live in, the community is set up so people are not allowed to make any of their own choices. Another example is, the community does not know about the outside world; therefore, when Jonas says “‘did you know that once there really were elephants? Living ones?’” (Lowry 127), and then Lily sarcastically said “‘Right...sure Jonas’”(Lowry 127). Jonas and The Giver are the only one’s who know about the memories and feelings that no one else
