Character Analysis Of Jonah In Break By Hannah Moskowitz

I am currently reading a novel called Break. The novel focuses on health rather than the relationship between a male and female. The story it tells in the beginning is about a boy named Jonah, who is on a mission to break every single bone in his body believing that by breaking his bones, they will grow stronger than they were originally. The author of the novel, Hannah Moskowitz, demonstrates that the main character, Jonah, is careless because he says that "It's been about six months since I haven't had something in a cast" (Moskowitz 20). Here the author is letting the reader know that it wasn't Jonah's first time breaking a bone. I believe that Jonah is not giving enough thought about what he does. I think this because, although his closest friends have tried to warn him about the harms it could cause to his health and how he should stop breaking his bones, he is neither concerned nor worried about it. A student attending the same school asked "You're just a little mess nowadays aren't you?" (38), and in response Jonah says "'I'm clumsy.' I smile politely, hoping this will be enough to eschew him" (38). Jonah would appear clumsy in other's perspectives because they would think that he had gotten into a minor accident, such as slipping on ice, or falling from the stairs. But in reality, Jonah would plan ahead of what he should do to break a bone, such as jumping off an empty fourteen feet swimming pool. I believe he was trying to avoid the truth from being spoken. Only several people know about his goal, those being his best friend Naomi, and his brother, Jesse. Jonah has many things that are weighing him down at home and at school.
