Jing-Mei hit a few bombs in the road even before she started her life; disappointment, sadness, angry and more. The most difficult challenge for her is seeing her mother being disappointed, “And after seeing once again, my mother’s disappointment face, something inside me began to die”. Jing-Mei was tired of always trying to be perfect for the wrong person, “I would have pulled her braids and punched her stomach” (Tan 225). Even though Jing-Mei tells her mother she doesn’t want to be a prodigy her mother still pushes her to the limit, Jing-Mei has to be a two face in order to keep doing what her mother wishes. Jing-Mei mother’s rules are nearly impossible to follow for her because that isn’t what her heart wants. Basically all Jing-Mei wants to do is be herself but with her mother only thinking about herself she can’t do what her heart truly
