As a method of coping, humans seek out the attention of others and look to them for support. Maia Szalavitz, a journalist for TIME.com writes “the more connections we have and the stronger our bonds are to each other, the more likely we are to survive, not just physically but emotionally”. Hardships become easier to endure when connecting with people or groups who have experienced similar emotions. As mentioned previously, Cormac McCarthy admirably grasped this concept in his novel The Road when he introduced father and son into a harsh dystopian atmosphere. Early on it is evident that these characters cannot survive without each other: Cameron 2…
Jerry made some crazy choices in The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier. And after reading Siegel's article on Teen's brains and their development, we can see why Jerry made some of these decisions. Dopamine could be responsible for Jerry's football try outs, him not selling chocolate, and his fight with Janza. Jerry really wanted to try out for the football team, although he was not suit for it at all, being very skinny. Jerry ended up getting really hurt in the try outs, but continued to play to impress the coach.…
Originally from Selmer, Tennessee; Bond Little is twenty-eight years old. He has served in the military for the last decade, has resided in Florida for the past nine years and relishes it; nonetheless, misses his family. People take pleasure in talking to him, and during conversations he cuts straight to the point. To depict his personality, I would say that he is part “Jeffery Lebowski” and part “Urban Cowboy” and makes him a fascinating character. His reported height is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs in at 215 pounds, he is a little overweight.…
Shane In Jack Schaefer’s short novel Shane it's about well a man named shane as it might imply. Every character in Joe’s Farm is selfless in their own way. This novel is an unforgettable adventure from front to back. Personally my favorite part is when Shane meets Jr. and Jr. has a unloaded gun and Shane’s reflexes kick in and he pulls out his gun and then Joe sorts everything out the reason I like this scene so much is because Shane thinks someone would give their like 10 year old kid a gun.…
For example, trying to get through the tunnel because those older boys did it. As a child, you want to do everything an older person can do because it is just so fascinating to see them do something that you never did before. It could also mean in Jerry’s mind that going through this tunnel is the route to manhood because all of the older guys did it, so if he can get through it he can be the big kid. In the story it said, “He would do it if it killed him, he said defiantly to himself. But two days before they were to leave - a day of triumph when he increased his count by fifteen - his nose bled so badly that he turned dizzy and had to lie limply over the big rock like a bit of seaweed, watching the thick red blood flow on to the rock and trickle slowly down to the sea.”…
The Will to Thrive Through the archetypes in the short story Through the Tunnel, Doris Lessing informs the reader that goals can become reality through hard work and determination. At first, Jerry only strives for attention. He does stupid things to try to gain people’s attention. However, his antics fall short with the native boys; instead “They looked down gravely, frowning” (Lessing). The quote is an example of the outcast archetype.…

In “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, O’Brien describes how the rookie soldiers feel through the hard times of the war. All the soldiers are frightened, but refuse to show their inner fear. It is not until Ted Lavender, a new recruit to the group who actually shows his uneasiness, separates to use the restroom and gets shot. The squad consists of Jimmy Cross, the 24 year old lieutenant who is in charge, Mitchell Sanders, Kiowa, Henry Dobbins, Dave Jensen, Ted Lavender, Norman Bowker, and Rat Kiley.…
Throughout the novel “The Sun Also Rises,” by Ernest Hemingway, the characters are often represented as “lost” both mentally and physically, in negative and positive ways. This is evident when Brett announces, “I won’t be one of those bitches,” exclaiming that she is finally coming to realize who she wants to be and what she wants from a man(247). This is negative because she was “lost” and was abusing her self-worth proving that she was physically misusing her body, but mentally she thought she was smart enough to not be “one of those bitches.” The main character Jake however, was “lost” in a positive way as he thinks to himself, “It felt strange to be in France again. There was a safe, suburban feeling,” explaining that Jake felt comfort…

The hero in the Outsiders could be more than one person, from Ponyboy even to Steve! But there is always one character that sticks out from the others, and that character is, Johnny Cade. But others like Pony and Dally can be considered heroes just for willing to help others if needed. But Johnny did more than just help others and be nice, he was a hero.…
In the short story “Gryphon” by Charles Baxter, the main character is Tommy, who is a young boy in fourth grade and goes to Five Oaks, and he defends his interesting, unique substitute teacher, Miss Ferenczi. Character traits are extremely important in novels; they affect the way the reader feels about each of the characters. Authors will often give the protagonists positive and relatable character traits so that the reader will feel emotionally invested in the characters. The antagonist will usually have negative character traits to build up dislike so that the reader will root for the protagonist. Character traits in a book often drive the plot and lead to the climax. Without defining and compelling character traits a book can become stagnant.…
Life in Context – The Developmental Analysis of Dwayne Hoover The most important developmental task adolescents’ face is the formation of a sense of identity (Erickson, 1968). Identity is a powerful construct, it aids in finding life paths and in making decisions (Schwartz et al., 2011) it defines who people are, and is constructed in the context of the environment around them, and their interactions with society (Erickson, 1968; Ibáñez-Alfonso, Sun, & Van Schalkwyk, 2016). However, identity formation does not happen neatly (Marcia, 1966) and the present essay examines the character Dwayne Hoover as his search for identity as his character develops throughout the movie Little Miss Sunshine. Character Description Dwayne is an adolescent,…
