Can someone fall into such a deep jealousness to the point where they would deliberately hurt their supposed best friend? In the story “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles, one of the main characters, Gene, has deep jealousy toward his self-proclaimed best friend Phineas. When Gene’s deep-rooted jealousy toward Finny goes too far, it will cost Phineas his outstanding athletic ability and it will cost him his life.
