Character Analysis
Roger Brown is a corporate headhunter, and he's a master of his profession. Roger is good at spotting the perfect candidate, and often their qualifications are negligible compared to their reputation and actions. This idea is introduced when Roger is interviewing a candidate for a job:
“He was knitted out in the perfect attire: grey Ermenegildo Zegna suit, hand-sewn Borelli shirt and burgundy tie with sperm-cell pattern, I guessed Cerrutti 1881. However, I was certain about the shoes: hand-sewn Ferragamo. I once had a pair myself.”

First-person narration creates a certain suspense because the readers understanding does not exceed the protagonist's. This is displayed when roger is introduced to the “perfect candidate” Clas Greve:
“His hand was warm, dry, the handshake firm without overdoing it, the recommended duration of three seconds. His eyes were calm, curious, alert; the smile friendly without being forced. My only complaint was that he was not as tall as I had hoped.”
Here we are introduced to the characters thoughts and the reader is allowed to see what Roger is thinking. When he says that “His hand was warm, dry, the handshake firm without overdoing it, the recommended duration of three seconds.” Here the reader gets to see a kind of commentary from the protagonist about Clas. This is significant because if this would have been in any other point of view, the reader could not have understood what the protagonist's thoughts were. We get an exclusive insight about what Roger thinks about Clas, and this is important because Roger is the person who decides who gets what job. He also states that “My only complaint was that he was not as tall as I had hoped.” Here the reader can understand what Roger is thinking and what he thinks of Clas. Since here he states that Clas “was not as tall as I had hoped”, from this we can see that Clas did not meet Roger’s expectations.
