When was the last time you either physically or emotionally harmed one of your best friends? Hopefully your answer to that is “NO”, because if you said “yes” or even had to think twice then you have a trait of a bad friend. In the novela “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck the two main characters George and Lennie are the “best of friends”. At Least that’s how it’s supposed to be presented. Within the novella George and Lennie have had their ups and down. However I feel as though they have had more downs and they are due to George being an overall bad friend to Lennie. Throughout the novella it has been made clear to me that George is not a good friend to Lennie. George has constantly putting Lennie down emotionally, and on multiple occasions calling him “a crazy bastard”. Not only has George hurt Lennie mentally but he has also tried to kill him. George is aware of the fact that Lennie cannot swim but urged Lennie to jump into a lake. George is doing this because he knows Lennie is not capable of standing up for himself. George also said that Lennie is a “nuisance” and is “too God damn dumb to take care of himself”.

Although this is true if George had left Lennie he would not have enough money to buy a farm for himself and never have to work for anyone again. For all we know George could have been tolerating Lennie for his own benefits. In this was George is manipulating Lennie with the privilege of tending rabbits as an incentive to not screw up opportunities work wise to achieve the goal of buying that farm. Not only is George a bad friend because he is taking complete advantage of Lennie but he KILLED Lennie. Yes you read that correctly George killed his ¨best
