A Separate Peace by John Knowles is know as a “coming of age story”, it follows Gene Forrester during his days at Devon School in the 1940’s. He is joined by Phineas his best friend/roommate, Phineas is a trusting, athletic, and caring young man. While Gene is studious, envious, and thoughtless, these characteristics will ultimately hurt both Gene and Phineas in contrasting ways. They are as close as two friends could be, but being very close friends is hard when one person can be so fragile. Gene was emotionally fragile at his time at Devon, his anger got the best of him, his wish to succeed and be the best took over his whole life; and because of the actions he made a this delicate state, he lost a life too.
