The Gift of the Magi is a very sentimental short story. The characters in this story especially Della James shows us what a great relationship consist of. Throughout the story Mrs. James shows us that she is a loving unselfish and eager to please, which helps us better understand why Mr. and Mrs. James marriage is so successful.
Dallas James shows loving she truly is throughout the whole story. No matter what della did she was always thoughtful and kind when it came to Mr James. Della James showed how love and she was when she said "Don't look at me that way. I had my hair cut off and sold because I couldn't live through Christmas without giving you a present." Mrs. James saying that proves how loving she is. Della did not want her husband to not have a Christmas present, that showed how much she loves him and is proud to be his wife.

James is very eager to please. Throughout the whole story she shows us this specific trait. Everything Della does revolves around how it will please her husband Jim. Della says to Jim when she sees her hair "don't you like me just as well, anyhow? I'm me without my hair, ain't it? This quote shows how eager Della is to please Jim. Della specifically asked Jim if he still likes her. Della also proceeded to reassure Jim that is just hair and that it will grow back. Throughout the whole story Della is concerned with what Jim will think about her hair which shows the fact that Della is eager to please on more than one account.
Della James is loving, unselfish and lastly eager to please. Those three traits describe Della James the best. Although "the gift of the magi" focuses on Della throughout most of the story we can still see that Della James and Jim have an amazing relationship.
