“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along,” said Eleanor Roosevelt, former first lady of the United States. Eleanor was a women’s rights activist. She encountered situations where if she didn’t have courage, she wouldn’t have gotten where she was today. Courage is observed in To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. Scout learns about courage from Atticus, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley.

This made people have different opinions on the Finch family. At the start of chapter 9, (Lee, 99) Cecil Jacobs had announced in the schoolyard that “Scout Finch’s daddy defends niggers.” Scout asks Jem what that means and he tells her to go ask her Atticus. Atticus says that he is “simply defending a Negro” and that he could never ask his children to mind him again (Lee, 100.) The Radley’s have had lots of stories go around about them and their son, Boo. “The more we told Dill about the Radleys, the more he wanted to know, the longer he would stand hugging the light-pole on the corner, the more he would wonder.” (Lee, 15) Ms. Maudie’s house caught fire and Boo had put a blanket on scout’s back to keep her warm. “Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn’t know it when he put the blanket around you.” (Lee, 72) Later on in this book, the children are attacked by Mr Ewell one night while walking home from the pageant. Boo brought up the courage to save the children even though the entire town gossiped about
