A Soldier’s Heart by Gary Paulsen is a story about fifteen year old Charley who wants to leave his farm and be enlisted in the first Minnesota Volunteers to be in the Civil War. He has no idea what he is fighting for or what a “shooting war” is and all he knew was that he didn’t want to miss out on a great adventure. Throughout his years of fighting against the Rebels in the Civil War, Charlie Goddard has evolved into a man who fought in war at the age of fifteen and came out a completely different man at the age of nineteen through physical, emotional, and personality changes over the course of four years.
