He uses that fact that he has a patch of grey hairs and is quite tall for his age. He tries on multiple occasions, but it doesn’t seem to work the majority. “ ‘Can’tcha stick a little rum in it or something?’ ‘I’m very sorry, sir …’ he said, and beat it on me. I didn’t hold it against him, though. They lose their jobs if they get caught selling to a minor. I’m a goddam minor.” (pg. 70). He lies for unnecessary things and reasons most of the time. “‘Rudolf Schmidt,’ I told her. I didn’t feel like giving her my whole life history. Rudolf Schmidt was the name of the janitor of our dorm.”(pg. 54). There is absolutely no reason for Holden to be lying in this bit of the book. The definition of being phony is being false just plain lying. Then he proceeded to ask her if she would like a cocktail, to which was declined. He was beyond kind to any person whom he crossed paths with. Gatsby was pushed and driven to do these things by love. Holden on the other hand, lies about who he is for no reason at all, just for the fun of it."Then I started reading this timetable I had in my pocket. Just to stop lying. Once I get started, I can go on for hours if I feel like it. No kidding. Hours.” (pg. 58). He talks about hating phonies for the majority of the book, even though he’s the biggest of them all. “I 'm the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life. It 's awful. If I 'm on my way to the store to buy a magazine, even, and somebody asks me where I 'm going, I 'm liable to say I 'm going to the opera. It 's terrible.” (pg. 16). He does exactly what he thinks is phony by putting on a front. Also,the way he spoke to people sometimes was extremely rude. Holden Caulfield is phonier than Jay Gatsby for multiple reasons. One being he accuses people of being phonies without the realization of him being a phony
