My Angel Mother
Abraham Lincoln once said, “All that I am, or hope to be. I owe it to my angel mother.” As a therapist, teacher, decision maker, and judge, mothers take on many roles to accommodate for their children. However, a mother’s duty is not always fulfilled by a biological mother. Sometimes, positive female influences step in and support children lead their lives. When Atticus is not at home, Calpurnia decides to take Scout and Jem to the First Purchase church. “Calpurnia scratched her head. Suddenly she smiled.’How would you and Mister Jem like to come to church with me tomorrow?’’’ (Lee 156). Currently in Maycomb, most people are set on the fact that whites are better than blacks according to the apartheid and social hierarchy of the community. The apartheid is the social system that segregates blacks and whites. The social hierarchy states that blacks are less than whites. Calpurnia wants to show the kids a new perspective on life. By taking Scout and Jem to the African American church, she is teaching the children that society is not always correct in their judgements. This experience really opened the children’s eyes, giving them a taste of the prejudice present in Maycomb. By exposing the kids to a new reality, she is able to help Scout and Jem understand why Atticus actually decided to take the Tom Robinson’s case seriously. Calpurnia gave the kids a first hand experience so they are not making assumptions based on what they hearing. Furthermore, Calpurnia spoke just like the rest of the African Americans at the church. Even though Calpurnia does not come from the same background as Scout and Jem, she constantly readjusts herself to fit in as much as possible. Calpurnia is not related to the children by blood. Yet, she is able to enlighten the kids about the world around them like a mother. Since everyone does not have a mother to assist them with every aspect of their lives, strong female influences take over, by guiding kids along their journey of life and picking them up every time they
