Beowulf: A New Telling by Robert Nye is a story about the Land of the Danes, ruled by Hrothgar, that is being haunted by the evil monster Grendel. Beowulf a young man and, nephew of the king of the Geats, sets off on a journey to save Hrothgar and his kingdom. Beowulf is an amazing book and character throughout the story which makes him the most perfect and ideal character. But, he has no flaws at all which makes his character quite unbelievable. Some examples of this is when Beowulf was facing Grendel he somehow …show more content…

Even though he was successful and they partied all night they completely forgot about the people who didn't make it and were eaten by Grendel. When Beowulf faced Grendel's mother, she barely fought back at him. All she did was say "sleep" and wrap him. But of course without any lasting injuries, Beowulf kills Grendel's mother by just saying a few words to scare her. All he said was ”’I am Beowulf, son of Beowulf.’ The monster’s eyes went cloudy. He said: “I am Beowulf, father of himself.’The eyes were helpless. They flickered with sleep. He said:’I am Beowulf, who am myself.’ The eyes shut. ‘Sleep,’ said Beowulf softly.’Sleep deep and never wake again.’ She slept.” He again use no strategy. All he did was strangle him and he won. When Beowulf went against the Firedrake he basically did nothing except create the plan to kill it. The only good aspect of his plan was he killed the Firedrake. Yet, as a child and young man, he is criticized as being lazy, incapable, spoiled. It is my opinion that this criticism, the doubt that he was held in by his peers, is the driving force of Beowulf’s success.…

This fight is more difficult for Beowulf than the fight with Grendel, as Beowulf is angry and his cause to kill is not pure: “He scoured the dwelling in single-minded anger” (1572-3). Beowulf only wins the fight because God has given him a sword. Yet that sword is melted by Grendel’s mother’s blood, which might suggest how powerful vengeance can be: it can destroy the God’s gift and make a man alienate himself from God. Beowulf is open to the evil of vengeance, which makes him a flawed hero in the Christian…

Ariana Wilde A Dollar a Day Keeps Death Away As one version of an oral tale-which vary greatly depending on the tale teller-, the Beowulf readers are familiar with reflects the morals and values of its circa tenth century recorder as well as those of the sixth century setting. The recorder of Beowulf uses several of the characteristics of epic poems in an attempt to instigate the generous and charitable behavior that (presumably) he views as morally correct. Throughout the poem, the recorder wields a variety of epithets to characterize the heroic figures, whom the Anglo-Saxon audience admires and strives to emulate, as lavish givers.…
