Tris has to essentially discover herself. “A new place, a new name, I can be remade here. ‘Tris’, I say firmly”.(60). Tris formerly known as Beatrice has just given herself a new identity. Tris throughout the story is also trying to protect those she loves. "'We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.'"(206). When Eric forces will to stand in front of a target to have knives thrown at him, Tris stands up and says it isn’t right, so they make Tris take his place. While Tris is standing there having knives thrown around her, she must not flinch or she will be dropped from Dauntless. Tris passes the test and the group cheers her own for her bravery. “Becoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it, that's the point.” Tris’s biggest fear is hurting those she loves. Well during the end of the book Tris’s mother Natalie gets killed to protect Tris when all is a war seen. Tris’s mother showed ultimate bravery giving her own life for her
