Character Analysis Of Annemarie In 'Number The Stars'

All of the lies told in the novel “Number the Stars” influenced Annemarie to grow up. They strengthened Annemarie’s relationship with Uncle Henrik. They helped her achieve a brave personality, and assisted her on her journey from girlhood to womanhood.

Annemarie got to know Uncle Henrik very well. He tried to keep her in the dark about some things, like when he said, “Well girls, it is a sad event. Not too sad, really, because she was very, very old. There has been a death and tonight your Great Aunt Birte will be resting in the living room, in her casket, before she is buried tomorrow.”(page 72). Annemarie was confused. This was the first time she had heard about a death in the family, and who was her Great Aunt Birte? Annemarie confronted

“How brave are you little Annemarie?” he asked suddenly. “Not very”, she confessed, looking at the floor of the barn(page 75 and 76). At the end of the story, she realized how brave she really was. For example, when she ran as fast as she could to give the Handkerchief to Uncle Henrik. The handkerchief ruined the dog's smell and protected them in the act of smuggling Jews to Sweden. She went on to have a brave personality.

Annemarie took on a lot of situations. This caused her to grow up. People started treating her like an adult. She had the responsibility to take care of her friend Ellen. Annemarie had to pretend Ellen was her sister, and sometimes Ellen depended on Annemarie. When they ran into a German soldier on the street Annemarie stood up for her. ”Are you a good student?” the soldier asked.He seemed to be sneering.”Yes.” “What is your name?” “Annemarie Johansen.” “Your friend- is she a good student,too.” She nodded at the soldier. “Better than me,”she said(3-4). As the story continued Annemarie grew into a young woman.

In conclusion the lies in the novel “Number the Stars” caused her to grow up. Annemarie and Uncle Henrik grew closer. When she understood the lies they helped her achieve a brave personality, and carried her on her journey from girlhood to
