One significant theme Miller conveys throughout The Crucible is deciding whether or not it is worth to lie. He shows this through Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Judge Danforth.
From the beginning of The Crucible Abigail Williams lies. Throughout the book she lies, manipulates her friends and the entire town, and eventually sends nineteen innocent people to their deaths (SparkNotes Editors). In Act I Abigail was about to get busted for experimenting with witchcraft, but managed to blame the whole situation on Tituba, Reverend Parris’s black slave from Barbados. Abigail had an affair with Elizabeth Proctor’s husband, John Proctor. In an effort to get rid of Elizabeth she persuaded Tituba to go out that night and put a curse on Elizabeth.
