Analysis Of Beneatha Younger In Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun

Throughout the fiction play “A raisin in the sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, Beneatha Younger (Bennie) stands out immensely amongst the Younger family, described as an approximately 20 year old college student who is “Slim and intense...with an intellectual face that has handsomeness of its own…” Beneatha dreams of becoming a doctor in the future; and carries herself adequately regardless of the younger financial status or class appears to be. When first introduced to the audience; Beneatha comes across as an ungrateful, self-centered young adult oblivious to the sacrifices made by the Younger family in order for her to obtain an education helping her succeed and become a doctor. Beneatha is superlatively privileged amongst the Youngers. She obtains the highest education as well as having the opportunity of joining extracurricular clubs and activities which none of the Youngers had the opportunity to purse in. Beneatha may sometimes be described as a very obnoxious, outspoken young woman, as well as self-centered. It seems unfair to the remaining Younger family the fact that sacrifices are being made in order for Beneatha to obtain a well off education and become a doctor.
