Act III: (26) Val is at her cocktail party and explains to her guests that the book is fictional and not about Gary’s family in Texas, nobody believes her. (27) Gary is trying to leave Abby’s, she tells him that she is better for him than Val. (28) Val tells her editor that she isn’t happy with the way he is trying to sell her book. Karen and Lilimae can’t find Gary at the party and decide to call him up. (29) Abby tells Gary to stay with her, since that is where he wants to be. (30) Karen and Lilimae can’t get ahold of Gary, and Val asks if they have seen him. They say they haven’t and Diana tells Karen and Lilimae that she knows who is having an affair. (31) Gary tries to leave, but Abby convinces him to stay. (32) Val continues to fight …show more content…
Knot’s Landing had many protagonists throughout its 14 year run, and the episode in question had at least 12 protagonists. That may seem like a lot of protagonists to follow, but the show does a good job of simplifying this, by making the characters already related to one another in some way or another. Here are a few examples, Val and Gary are married; Lilimae is Val’s mother; Joe is Karen’s brother; Diana is her some and Abby is her sister-in-law. Having the characters be related to one another is a good way for the show to also build drama, so when Karen finds out that her sister-in-law, Abby, is sleeping with her friend Val’s husband, Gary, there is a lot of drama going on. I would say that this characteristic of the serial narrative is effectively handled in this …show more content…
Every episode (even the pilot) opens in the middle of the story, so the audience has a lot of catching up to do. Lilimae is a character that has large chunks of exposition in her dialog, a excellent example is when she reminds Laura that Richard had a mental breakdown. In reality Laura should know that her husband had a mental breakdown, but if a viewer missed the last couple of episodes, they might be confused as to why Laura and Richard are separated. Another great example comes at the beginning of the episode, when Lilimae tells Val that she thinks Gary is having an affair with Abby. This is an instant reminder to returning viewers and new viewers, letting everyone know what is going on between Val, Gary and
