Kayley is very confident with herself. One reason is she spits in her hand before she whips it on the rock at the beginning of the story. Even though it is a tradition to touch the rock. It is probably not common to spit in your hands before you touch the rock. Another reason is because she leads herself and her friend through the forest with much confidence. I am one of those people that has gone through forests and loves/ cares for it, but a lot of people don't, so I think she does and that is why she is so confident.
