Character Analysis: I Am The Messenger

In the book I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak, the theme of how one person can make a difference in society or in another person’s life is evident throughout the story. From helping out complete strangers to helping out his own friends and loved ones, Ed Kennedy seeks validation and purpose through these good deeds.

In the first chapter, the story starts at a bank robbery where Ed and his friends are held hostage with other people at a bank. Ed and his pal Marv are argueing about Marv’s old and beat up car which is a joke to everyone but Marv, but when the robber tells them to quiet down and Marv sases him back, Marv is face to face with the robber’s gun. However, the robber leaves him alone when his money is ready to go and he steals Marv’s car to make a getaway but since the car is a joke it doesn’t start and the gunman leaves his gun on the ground and this is where Ed becomes a hero because he picks up the gun and shoots

At the first address Ed sees a man raping his wife and Ed doesn’t know what to really do and how he can help, so he leaves.

At Ed’s next adress he sees a lonely old lady and he helps her by keeping her company and being her friend. He reads to her as well. This is the first time that Ed really does anything to be proud of. So with his new found high, Ed visits the next address and finds a girl who just wants to run. He watches her run for a while and goes to one of her meets. Ed helps Sohpie by giving her the courage to really run and to just be free. Even though Sophie doesn’t win the match, she’s happy. Sophie tells Ed how grateful she is and asks him, “Are you some kind of saint or something?” (74). Ed laughs it off, but this makes him feel
