Character Analysis: How Stories Came To Earth

A story can contain a character who has an enormous amount of intellect and uses it to play tricks on others. These characters are called tricksters and they each have special, unique elements. A trickster character always tries to get what they want. Trickster tales contain humorous and clownish elements, negative qualities of the trickster character and gods, spirits and the supernatural.
In every story there are always funny moments. An element from trickster tales is humorous and clownish elements of the tales which includes the trickster making another character look foolish or to make the tricksters themselves look ridiculous so they can go through with their plan. In the story “How Stories Came to Earth” the fairies begin to fight with a fake doll. This made them look very foolish and it helped Anansi to capture them, which is why it is a clownish element of a tale. The trickster character will basically do anything to get what they want and they have bad qualities, they are not a typical hero figure. Negative qualities of a trickster are shown in the story “Coyote Steals Fire”. Coyote, the trickster character, cheats in a game of dice against Thunder. Although Coyote ultimately helps the other animals, he still had the negative trait of lying. In “Master Cat”, Master Cat he says “... you will be cut up into little pieces until you look like chopped meat”. He was trying to help people, but was rude and mean when he did so which is a negative characteristic. Finally, in the story “How Stories Came to Earth” Anansi tricks all of the animals into getting trapped which was a bad thing to do, but then he helped the rest of the world by sharing all the stories with them.
