Girl, Interrupted is a story that takes place in a psychiatric ward during the late 1960’s in Massachusetts. The main character is an eighteen-year-old girl Susana Kaysen, who suffers from borderline personality disorder. Borderline personality disorder is a debilitating high-risk disease associated with strong emotional suffering that impairs everyday functioning (Fertuck, Karan, & Stanley, 2016, p. 1). She is a troubled teenager who recently left high school and appears to come from a wealthy family. Her parents are very preoccupied with what society has to say about their daughter’s current state of mind. Susana passively narrates the movie, and scenes come and go about past life events. One of those events, which have great importance, is a love affair with one of her teachers, who is married, with children her own age. It taught me the importance of understanding a mental illness; it is our nature to be quick to judge people not knowing what truly is happening with their health and lives.
