Introduction
Sitcoms are a popular form of modern entertainment, for their wits, and their depiction of real life experiences in a humorous manner. While viewer preference determines the popularity of such shows, producers make sure they enrich elements such as plot, theme, characters and an interesting story line to attract an even bigger audience. Fans always connect with a show, and it becomes popular if it reflects a certain aspect of their life, with certain characters. Two of these popular sitcoms are “Friends”, and “How I Met Your Mother.” So popular were these shows that they went on for ten years producing a full season each year. Plot The two sitcoms have an almost similar plot with the contribution of a live audience who help bring out the comic side of events in both of these shows. Producers chose the plot of young people after college trying to make a mark, and building their lives, careers and relationships. Set in New York, all these characters have to struggle to find their place in the big city, and all have personal challenges they need to overcome. In Friends, Ross is a paleontologist who ends up teaching, while Joey is a struggling actor with few prospects. Phoebes is a musician trying to make it, Monica is a bubbling chef, Rachael an aspiring fashion icon working as a server while Chandler has a job he does not like (Wild & Wild, 22).
