Alternate ending to “Fangirl” by Rainbow Rowell
As Cath is reading the ending of her Simon Snow fanfiction to Levi, she receives a phone call. She intended to ignore it, but Levi already answered it. He had a solemn look on his face and tried not to make eye contact with Cath when he hung up the phone.
“I, uh, I don't really know how to say this but, you see...” Levi stuttered, not being able to form a sentence. “Whatever it is can’t be that bad!” Cath said with humor laced in her tone. Levi gulped and gave her a look and she couldnt ignore the burning feeling growing in her stomach anymore. Cath moved toward Levi until she was sitting next to him. Levi pulled her into a tight hug and whispered “Babe, your dad, he’s dea- he passed away. I’m

The ride to the hospital consisted of more sobbing on Cath’s part and countless attempts to calm her down on Levi’s part. When the pair walked inside, the nurse led them to the room Mr. Avery (Cath’s dad) was in. The nurse stopped Cath and asked her where her twin sister, Wren, was. Cath hadn't even thought of her until then, but she knew Wren was out probably getting wasted somewhere. The nurse told Cath that the reason for her father’s death was because he spent 5 days in his home without eating, drinking or taking his meds. He was working on his new idea “Gravioli” and that means he died happy, so that’s good. The nurse rushed in again looking pale and whispered “Your sister, she’s dead too. Alcohol poisoning. They no longer are in college and own an apartment together. They plan on getting married in four months. Cath talks to her mom regularly and visits once every month. After the death of the most important people in her life, Cath fell into a depression. She attempted suicide one time, but the pain she saw on Levi’s face was enough for her to pull herself out of the weird funk. As Cath checks the Newspaper article she was assigned to edit (her job is a newspaper editor), the phone rings. She gets up from her position on the couch and walks lazily toward the phone. A deep british voice says a “hello?” that sends shivers down her spine. “Uh, he-hello. Who is this?? I’m sorta trying to get some work done so can you ,like, talk a lil’ faster? Please.” Cath says in a squeaky voice. “My name is Ace Avery, and i’m pretty sure I’m your long lost brother” the unknown voice rasped with a chuckle. Time seems to have stopped and Cathers (a nickname Lebi claims only he can use, but i’m the narrator and I can do whatever I want) forced a humorless laugh out. “Pranks aren't funny kid, especially one like this. Now if you’ll excuse me I ha-” the voice cut her off frantically, “No no no, not a prank!! I can assure you. I promise, please just- can we get coffee maybe, tomorrow? I swear on my mother’s grave it’s not a prank.” Being the curious person she is, Cath agreed but made sure to tell the “Ace” kid she would be bringing her 27 year
