How would you feel if your parents left you to move almost 2,000 miles away from you? This is a problem faced by Enrique, the main character in the novel Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario. He faces in the problem in an unusual way though, he decides to travel 2,000 miles away illegally and seek out his mother. He faces many obstacles through his journey. Enrique faces these obstacles with bravery and courageousness. This novel shows readers a whole different side of illegal immigration. The readers see Enrique travel through Mexico on moving freight trains, jumping on and off making stops for food. He faces many migrant agents, many of which sent him back to his home country. One of the many problems Enrique faces is his mother leaving Mexico and her children to live in America. The community of Honduras in very low maintenance, Enrique’s mother, Lourdes decides to leave the community and go live in America to make more money to send to her children when Enrique is only five years old. “Lourdes has decided; She will leave. She will got to the United States and make money and send it home,” As stated on page 4. Enrique does not handle his mother leaving well. He is very upset that his mother left him, but he somewhat understands why she left. Enrique knows that his mother left to better his life and he grows from the experience, he starts to miss his mother and decides to go find her. Another problem Enrique faces on his journey is when Enrique reaches the United States and finally sees his mother again, he grows to resent her. He hates that she left him when he was very young. He starts to drink a lot and started sniffing paint thinner. He starts acting out as a representation of hate for his mother. “Enrique sucks down ten beers on the weeknights, often with friends in front of the house,” As said on page 201 “Going out drinking gets him out of the trailer, where nine people live and Enrique must sleep on the living room sofa,” (201).
