Bless Me, Ultima is about a young boy, Antonio, telling the story of his coming-of-age with the guidance of his Ultima or grandmother. Antonio’s mother wanted him to become a Priest in the community of farmers where they lived. Antonia was unsure what he was destined to do in the beginning of the movie, but as the movie progressed and the plot developed it became clear to him by the end of the movie. There are a variety of strengths in the family that were displayed in the movie “Bless Me Ultima. The family dynamic stood out to me in many ways. After watching the movie, I can recall, the family relationships, communication style, religion, culture and education.
Relationships
The family upheld the most respect for the grandmother (Ultima).

During that time there was a conflict between cowboys and farmers. The family were farmers and lived in a small community of farmers. The family believed in folk healing, as Ultima practiced folk healing well. The family valued each individual to think independently and to uphold the family values at all times. The movie explores several conflicts. Due to Antonio’s parent been deeply rooted in cultural convictions, they each had different goals for him. His mother wanted him to be a priest and his father wanted him to ride the llano. There was also a conflict between the Spanish and Indigenous cultures in the town they lived in. This is evident by the tension between the catholic church and Ultima’s folklore mystical healing. There was also a conflict at school between the Spanish speaking and the English speaking.
Healing
Ultima, the grandmother, magic healing is guided by her owl. The owl also protects Ultima. The owl is significant throughout the film. When the owl is killed in the movie Ultima dies shortly after. Ultima’s magic healing is guided by her owl. The owl also protects Ultima. The owl protected Ultima against the man in the community, who was upset with her for his daughters passing. When he arrived at the home to kill Ultima, the owl protected her by poking his eye out. When the owl is killed in the movie Ultima dies shortly after.
