Dear Ms. Wasson,

Intriguing, unexpected, and complex, A Wrinkle In Time was very entertaining and kept me engaged from start to finish. Madeleine L’Engle balances complicated concepts with ideas like love and tenacity to form a book that is almost impossible to put down and deserves a solid 9/10. Madeleine L’Engle’s main character: Meg, comes off at first to the reader and to her classmates and teachers in the story as problematic and stubborn. She lives with her family which includes her missing scientist father, Alexander, her elegant scientist mother, Katherine, her prodigious 5-year-old brother, Charles Wallace, Sandy and Dennys, her athletic, 10-year-old twin brothers, and their companionable dog, Fortinbras. THat’s what your father and I feel.” Meg twisted her pencil so hard that it broke. She laughed. “I’m sorry. I’m really not being destructive. I’m just trying to get things straight.” “I know.” “But Charles Wallace doesn’t look different from anybody else.”
“No, Meg, but people are more than just the way they look. Charles Wallace’s difference isn’t physical. It’s in essence.”
Meg sighed heavily, took off her glasses and twirled them, out them back on again. “Well, I know Charles Wallace is different, and I know he’s something more. I guess I’ll just have to accept it without understanding it.”
Mrs. Murry smiled at her. “Maybe that’s really the point I was trying to put across.” (53-54)

In this conversation with Meg and her mother, Meg is realizing that the way someone appears to others can be very different than how they seem on the inside. Meg experiences this idea many times during her experiences, like with Calvin and Ms. Whatsit, and later, she takes that knowledge and uses it to her advantage to overcome her obstacles. Meg is faced with many challenges, and uses her gift, the gift of love, and expresses it to overcome destructive forces. She is able to understand love as something her enemy doesn’t have. The fact that Meg is able to recognize her gift and use it wisely, displays her emotional intelligence. All of this makes Meg such an interesting character to read
