Putting myself in the story A Wrinkle in Time, could change relationships as well as how the story unfolds. Adding another character would dramatically change the relationships of all the other characters. First of all I could be another friend of Meg and Calvin and go along on the trip. If I was the “third wheel” the tone of their relationship would end up more friendly than romantic. On page 220, paragraph 6: “Calvin came to her and took her hand, then drew her roughly to him and kissed her.” If I was along for the journey, Calvin may have never developed his feelings for Meg and kissed her.
