Tennessee Williams uses juxtaposition in this scene to compare Blanche lies to the lyrics in the song about falsehood. Every aspect in “Paper Moon” is fake, from paper moon, to a cardboard sea and a melody in penny arcade. Blanche knows she is deceiving men with her false beauty but she continues to do it because she loves sexual attention from men. At the end of scene five, she was so desperate for attention she kissed a young man that she did not know. She told him “You make my mouth water (Williams 84),” then, continues to kiss him. When Stanley mentions Shaw from Blanche’s past, she immediately becomes worried. So, her immediate reaction was to receive attention from a man, and she did not care who, which is why she kissed the newspaper boy. If she has to receive attention from men to feel beautiful then her beauty is indeed fake. In scene three when she is flirting with Mitch she asks him to put a lantern over the light bulb. Then, she says “I can’t stand a naked light bulb any more than I can a rude remark or a vulgar action (Williams 55).” This reveals that if she has to be seen by a man she wants it to be almost dark. The dim light represents the sexual affairs she has had with me which is why she feels “secure” in a dim light. She thinks that the world revolves around money and you can not be happy unless you have luxurious things. She feels the need to always have on expensive perfume and fur sweaters. Her biggest fear is to live somewhere like Stella is living, which is why she wants to marry a wealthy man. Blanche is very prejudice about those who are not as rich as she is or used to be. She pretends that she is still rich, and the fact that she in not scares her. The way she deceives the ones who love her the most, like Stella, shows that she is heartless. Blanche does not want to except her kismet, which is probably back to being an English teacher and living in Laurel. Lying to herself and others makes her life appear faker that what it really is. She has already lost Belle Reve, her husband, respect from people in Laurel and the route she is going, she is also going to lose Stella too. Since Stanley does not like Blanche, he is trying everything he can to ruin her stay in New Orleans. This reveals that you can not run from your past because it is going to haunt you everywhere you go until you confront it. Once Blanche does this, she will live a happy
