Character Analysis: A Long Walk To Water

In A Long Walk to Water, Linda Sue Park tells a true story about one of the thousands of Lost Boys of Sudan, named Salva. Salva ran when the Second Sudanese Civil War hit his village. This story takes place in Southern Sudan to Ethiopia to Kenya. He moves from country to country to get away from the war. Also Linda made up a character, named Nya. Just to incite how life was after the war. Linda Sue Park’s main character, Salva survived by being strategic, by getting help from others, and by having courage. Salva shows being strategic in A Long Walk to Water by walking through the hot and dreadful desert and only being able to drink tiny sips of water, which he planned to do. After Salva bestfriend died, Marial. Salva had to walk through the hot desert with only taking tiny sips of water when he could have drunk big gulps of water. Linda Sue Park wrote “ It was the hardest thing Salva had ever done, taking only tiny sips when his body cried out for huge gulps of thirst quenching life giving water. (Chapter 9, Page 53). After crossing the long Nile River, Salva shoes were busted. So he decided to take off his shoes and walk barefoot. He stubbed his foot and his uncle helped him push through. The book states “ Salva stubbed his toe on a rock, and his whole toenail came off. The pain was terrible...Uncle continued in the way for the rest of the walk. Each time, Salva would think of his family and his village, and somehow able to keep his wounded foot moving forward, one painful step at a time.”( Chapter 9, Page 53-54) Salva didn't give up on walking through the hot desert in pain. He used his Uncle’s support and motivation to keep going, Salva could have not taken his Uncle's Help and he could have gave up but he didn't. He took his Uncle's help and he used that to become
