The way Hank Morgan used his knowledge to gain power during the Medieval Period was assisted by superstition; which allowed Hank to climb in ranking, plus he saved himself from being burned alive when he claimed the eclipse was the work of his enchantments. Merlin who was the original magician became somewhat jealous and/or furious due to Hank’s sudden leap in ranking but didn’t have the authority to do anything except spread rumors.
