Young Goodman Brown sets out on a journey from his Salem village home, bidding his young wife, Faith, goodbye. Faith was young, wore a pink ribbon on her hair and did not approve of his journey. On his way, he met and Old man who was referred to as the devil. He claimed to be friends with browns father and grandfather in the past. The old man urges Young Goodman Brown to continue his journey and offers to lend Goodman Brown his walking stick, which is carved in the shape of a snake. Further down the road they met Goody Cloyse, who was known in the village as a Christian. Young Goodman Brown decided to hide from the woman because he did not want to be identified with the old man.

The Old Man/Devil
This could be the devil that actually tempted the villagers as well as Young Goodman and Faith to resort to evil and occultism. He lured them to the evil forest for initiation. The devil as we read the story represent the evil side of man. His role was manifest as he initiated the villagers into evil that night. The effect of the devil on Young Goodman Brown would affect him and all his decisions for the rest of his life.
Goody Cloyse
An elderly lady who was also a citizen of Salem Village. She would later introduce herself as a witch who is a member of the witches occult. However, Goody Cloyse is recognized as a Christian and a very religious woman in the village. She teaches the Bible to the little ones in the village. It becomes apparent that she secretly performs magic ceremonies in the forest at night. She is also responsible for initiating new members to the witches’ coven.
The adjective I would use to characterize the main characters are wicked and deceitful.

The speech of these characters was fast, lyrical, elegant and sometimes angry.
SETTING
Young Goodman Brown story takes place in Puritan New England, Salem, Massachusetts to be specific. The story starts in the evening and proceeds through the night, to the next morning. The setting is symbolic as cultic initiations are performed at night. Another symbolic nature of the setting was that all the pious members of the village are not what they portray themselves to be. A vivid description of the setting is a scene in the forest where the villagers gathered around the bonfire, all faces familiar and the couple at the center of the initiation was Goodman Brown and his wife Faith, facing and staring directly at each other in surprise, disgust and awe. I would describe the setting as fearful and captivating, full of suspense, and enchanting.
