Chapter Essay 2: Kydd Ch. 5 Debate in Baghdad In chapter 5 Kydd discusses many different topics. He talks about iconoclasm, Muslims and Christians, Chinese Christianity, the Eucharist, Pippin and Charlemagne, etc.. Out of all the things that Kydd discusses I think the two of the more important topics is iconoclasm and the Carolingian empire with Pippin the short and Charlemagne. The first main topic is Iconoclasm. The definition of Iconoclasm is the destruction of religious icons and other images or monuments for religious or political motives. People who support iconoclasm are known as iconoclasts. So in this chapter it discusses whether you can have pictures or paintings of Jesus Christ and whether or not you can use these icons for prayer.

He subdued and reigned over his enemies all throughout modern day France and well into the neighboring lands that would become Spain, Italy and Germany. This titan of ancient times is often remembered only by his conquests, but the accounts of Einhart and Notker show him in much more depth and color, leaving the readers with a well fleshed out, multifaceted mental image of the man behind the conquest. To define Charlemagne by his trials helps present him in stark terms. He was a man of staunch faith who worked hard for its propagation. In contrast to his love of Christianity, Charles’ apparent self-adulation provides a new dimension showing a seeming contradiction of what was, at once, a godly man and a king driven by his love of self.…

Canada and Iraq both share a democratic government. Unfortunately, Iraq has not been as successful as Canada in developing their criminal justice system. Iraq shares some of the same ideas as Western criminal law such as; right to a fair trial, right to an attorney and a right to be proven innocent until guilty (Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, 1982, s 10-11). Although the systems are alike Iraq has procedural issues like, longer wait times for trials and many accusations of coercion for confessions (Council on foreign affairs, 2008). Canada’s criminal justice system is well developed while Iraq’s criminal justice system is still striving to work through their internal issues.…

    Overregulation In Iraq

When I was stationed in Iraq I learned that during the transition from one command to another there should be a time that policies and procedures should remain the same until they can be evaluated to see if they work or need to be revised to be more efficient in completing the mission. I believe that taking over a department having numerous policies and procedures has more of an advantage than that of one with very few. If I were to inherit a department, I would prefer to take over a department with policies and procedures that were numerous. By having numerous policies and procedures it may regulate the officers too much but after reviewing and revising the policies and procedures of the department. Overregulation can simply be eased by revising…

The most of the public have a preconceived knowledge that a lot of politicians are not completely honest with the public. There are many examples of politicians not doing what they originally said they were going to do or keeping things from the public all around the world. Although there are many examples, most politicians would not admit that politics, in general, are dishonest. But that is what Saddam Hussein did in his quote “Politics is when you say you are going to do one thing while intending to do another.” Saddam Hussein, non-U.S. president, was in charge of Iraq for two decades.…

Baghdad’s eventual isolation from the Arabic speaking world was caused by its position between the Mongol-Persian Ilkhanate to its east and the Arabic-Mamluk sultanate to its west. With the death of the caliph, considered to be the last spiritual leader of Islam, Baghdad had lost much, from its nearly annihilated population; the destruction of its irrigation systems, built during the time of Mesopotamia; and the end of the Islamic Golden Age. The Islamic capital shifted west towards Cairo and Damascus after the siege, altering the course of Islam’s development. Islam itself, beyond that of Baghdad, temporarily lost its claim to religious superiority after the siege (Gilli-Elewy, 2011). The “city of peace” no longer, it would take Baghdad until…

Nick Sherman Professor Asal Political science 102 9/27/16 In the wake of 9/11 The United States, The United Kingdom, and many other nations formed a coalition against the Ba’athist regime of Saddam Hussein. The coalition force invaded in 2003 to overthrow Saddam’s dictatorship and establish a democratic state in the Middle East.
